How to Clean Invisalign Aligners

Book Now

Invisalign aligners are a popular option for straightening your teeth without traditional metal braces. The clear plastic aligners are designed to be removable, which can make them easier to clean when compared to traditional braces. Even though you should replace your trays every 1–2 weeks, keeping your Invisalign aligners clean helps keep them clear and stave off bad breath.

You should rinse your aligners at night and brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and liquid soap to clean food debris. Invisalign also offers a range of cleaning accessories you can use to clean your aligners. When you visit us for dental exams and cleanings, we can also offer tips and tricks to help you keep your smile bright as Invisalign aligners do their work.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear aligner treatment involving customized clear plastic trays (aligners) that fit snugly over your teeth. The aligners are designed to gradually adjust your teeth’s position over a specific period of time until they reach your desired position.

Invisalign treatment typically starts with a consultation, where we can evaluate your teeth and determine whether Invisalign is the right option for you. You typically need to wear the aligners for 20–22 hours per day, removing them only when eating, brushing, and flossing, and you will gradually move to a new set of aligners around every 2 weeks for the duration of your treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers several benefits, which include:

  • Discreet treatment: Invisalign aligners are clear and can be more subtle than traditional braces. This means you can straighten your teeth without worrying about having a mouth full of metal wires and brackets.
  • Shorter wear time: In some cases, Invisalign treatment may be quicker than treatments with traditional braces and require fewer dentist visits.
  • Removable aligners: You can remove the aligners whenever you need to eat, brush, or floss. So you may not have to give up your favourite foods during treatment.
  • Designed for comfort: Invisalign aligners are designed to move teeth gradually and fit your mouth, which some people find provides a comfortable experience.

Can I Just Rinse My Aligners?

First and foremost, it’s important to understand you often need to do more than just rinse your aligners with water to clean them. Although rinsing may remove visible debris, you may have to use additional cleaning methods to address the hidden bacteria that can accumulate on the aligners.

The following is the basic cleansing process recommended by Invisalign:

  • Rinse your aligners with water every night.
  • Brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, clear liquid soap to remove any debris or food particles collected throughout the day.

Invisalign Cleaning Accessories

You can further enhance your cleaning routine by using specialized cleaning products designed for Invisalign aligners, such as Steraligner or cleaning crystals.

Steraligner for Cleaning Aligners

Steraligner is a daily cleaning option that uses isopropyl alcohol and sodium bicarbonate to remove bacteria from the aligners and help prevent plaque buildup.

Invisalign suggests following these steps for cleaning your aligners with Steraligner :

  • Pour enough Steraligner into a soaking tray to reach the fill line without going over.
  • Carefully place your aligners into the soaking tray and fill it with tap water until the aligners are covered. Soak your aligners for 3–5 minutes.
  • Take your aligners out of the soaking tray. Wet a toothbrush and scrub both sides of each aligner in the sink.
  • Rinse your aligners, toothbrush, and hands thoroughly with running water until the cleansing solution has been completely cleaned off.
  • Discard the remaining soaking solution and rinse the tray for future use.

Deep Cleaning Crystals

Cleaning crystals can provide a thorough wash that actively removes bacteria, fungus, and plaque from your aligners. The cleaning crystals recommended by Invisalign help keep your aligners clear while eliminating foul odours caused by bacteria buildup.

To use cleaning crystals for cleaning your aligners, follow these steps.

  • Rinse your aligners under tap water.
  • Place your aligners into a clean container and fill it with enough warm water to cover the aligners fully. Add 1 packet of cleaning crystals.
  • Gently shake or stir the water for 20 seconds to dissolve the crystals.
  • Let the solution stand for at least 15 minutes. Gently shake or stir again for 20 seconds.
  • Rinse your aligners and container with warm water.

Do’s & Don’ts of Cleaning Invisalign Aligners

Your aligners can do a lot for you, so you should keep them in good shape. Here are some do’s and don’ts for cleaning your aligners:

Do:

  • Brush your aligners gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove residue without scratching them.
  • Soak your aligners or clean them with cleaning products at least once a day to prevent plaque and bacteria growth.
  • Always rinse your aligners before and after wearing them.

Don’t:

  • Use mouthwash, denture cleaners, or hot water to clean your aligners, as it can damage the material and cause warping.
  • Leave your aligners out of their case when not wearing them, as they can collect bacteria from their surroundings.
  • Eat or drink anything except water while wearing your aligners.
